The leaves are turning, the nights are drawing in and autumn is upon us – although September has gone out in a blaze of warm sunshine.

We hope you have enjoyed your summers and those of you who attended the Vice-Chancellor’s summer party, and other events we have laid on, have had a good time.  Professor Fitt was so generous with his time, as always, and stayed for half the length of the party, talking to many members – it is so reassuring to have his continued support.

There is one final event organised for 2017 – 7th November a private visit to the Ashmolean – although we had given a cut off date we are told we can still book for it – see website for details.

We have been planning an active events programme for 2018 which, when finalised, will be advertised on the society’s website - we will let you know when you can begin to book the various ones that will be on offer.  Hopefully you will already have 28th February in your new diaries which is when the AGM will take place and will be followed by the Brookes Society annual lecture – this year given by Debbie Dance, the Director of the Oxford Preservation Society.  She will be talking on building a positive future for Oxford.

SUBSCRIPTIONS: At the last AGM in March you will remember that it was agreed we would introduce subscriptions from January 2018.  Since the Society was established 8 years ago Oxford Brookes has been very supportive in providing resources such as administrative help, registering for events, rooms for meetings, funding, and providing venues for, the two annual parties.  Now we are being asked to be more self-sustaining under pressure of finances within the University, by contributing to the cost of the parties.  The development of the Society will continue to be met by the University and the volunteers who sit on the committee.

For the £10 subscription fee you will be able to attend both the parties, choose from the programme of events organised annually (some will have a charge), have access to On Stream, all alumni discounts available (including reduced cost lunches at Brookes Restaurant) and regular communications from the university. For all details of the benefits please see this link: www.brookesalumni.co.uk/the-brookes-society/bs-services-and-discounts.

The preferred option to pay the £10 is by direct bank transfer to the Brookes Society account held with HSBC.  The details are Sort Code: 40-26-31; Account No: 61485954.  Please give your name as a reference when making the payment.

If any member would prefer to pay by cheque this may be done by making it payable to Brookes Society and sending it to the Chair, Clare Fox, at Meadows Close, Lower End, Great Milton, Oxford, OX44 7NF.  Last date to pay the subscription is 24th November.

Those who opt out of paying the subscription will continue to receive the newsletters but will not be eligible for any of the events the Society puts on or of the other benefits mentioned above (unless you are an alumnus).   We hope, however, you will consider that £10 is not too prohibitive and that you will continue to support the Society.

CALL FOR ACTION/HELP:  As many of you know it is my intention to step down as Chair of the Society at the AGM next year.  I have been delighted to be a member of the committee for the last 7 years, and chair for the last 3 but feel it is now time to hand the baton on.  Chris Weavers has been an able supporter as a committee member and secretary, also for the last 3 years.....he too is finishing his tenure, as is Mike Breakall another stalwart member, at the AGM.  For the Society to continue we do need “new blood” on the committee so I do urge you to consider becoming part of the organisation of the society – it is not onerous – the committee meets every 2/3 months or so and we have been known to have fun!!!  Our next meeting is on 28th November and it would be wonderful to go to it with a few names of prospective new committee members – do contact me on clareffox@aol.com and volunteer - PLEASE
