Founders’ Day

1 June 2016

Brookes alumna and Dragons’ Den star, Sarah Willingham '96 and alumnus author, Bryan Brown took part in Founders’ Day celebrations on 24 May.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Alistair Fitt said: “Founders’ Day recognises the visionary group of philanthropists who formed the Oxford School of Art, the extraordinary people who founded our like-minded predecessor organisations such as Dorset House, Westminster College and Bletchley Park Training College, and of course our modern founder John Henry Brookes.”

The event marked the official end of the 150th anniversary and a time capsule was sealed to give future students and staff direct contact with life at Brookes in 2016.

Among the items in the time capsule are:

  • memories from Oxford Brookes alumni
  • a copy of John Henry Brookes: The Man Who Inspired a University signed by Bryan Brown
  • a bottle of John Henry Celebration Ale brewed and hand bottled at The Shotover Brewery by Brookes alumnus and proprietor Ed Murray '99
  • four research case studies, each with corresponding items, representing the diversity and impact of our research
  • a copy of the The Little Book of Thank Yous - a publication for donors with examples of some of the initiatives that have been made possible through their support.

A big thank you to everyone who contributed to the time capsule. Read a selection of alumni memories (link)
Founders’ Day is set to become an annual event on or near to 22 May – the day in 1865 when teaching began at Oxford School of Art.
