President Obama's grandmother welcomes students to Kenya

Students from the Oxford School of Hospitality Management recently undertook a twelve-day trip to Kenya to experience first-hand the transformative power of social enterprise in tourism and hospitality. They travelled with Adventure Alternative, a tour operator that reinvests its profits in its sister charity, Moving Mountains Trust, to support health and education projects for vulnerable children and teenagers.

The intense programme was filled with visits, including to health clinics in Kibera (one of the largest slums in Africa), numerous primary and secondary schools and a particularly moving yet inspiring two-day stay in an orphanage in Ulamba. One of the many highlights of the field-trip was a private meeting with Sarah Obama, grandmother of President Barack Obama, who shared with students her views on social enterprise, the forthcoming elections in Kenya and, of course, the success of Barack.

Since December 2012, the students have raised over £2,000 to support the Moving Mountains Trust. Final year students will be providing further assistance by organising and hosting a fundraising dinner, which will take place in Brookes Restaurant on Tuesday 26th February 2013.
