Getting connected at OBREMS annual dinner

OBREMS dinner

The eighth Oxford Brookes Real Estate Management Society Dinner (OBREMS) was held on 8 November 2018 and celebrated 50 years of Real Estate at Oxford Brookes. OBREMS is the alumni association for alumni who work in the Real Estate industry.

Over 210 Real Estate alumni, supporters, current and past staff attended the evening. It was held in the luxurious Royal Horseguards hotel on Whitehall Place WC1 and hosted by the Chairman of OBREMS Jason Antill '01 and President Andrew Hynard '81, CEO of The Howard de Walden Estate and the OBREMS committee.

The annual event provides an opportunity for alumni to network and socialise . It is also a great opportunity to recruit alumni mentors to be part of their successful mentoring programme which gives Brookes second year Real Estate students an opportunity to be mentored by a professional.

In the last 50 years of the programme there have been so many outstanding individuals who have made a real difference to the surveying profession, either through leadership, policy making, urban development or in helping address important professional issues such as diversity and inclusion. Our alumni mentors support current students into the world of work and give so much back as guest speakers, through industry tours, case studies and sponsorship.

Pureres, Jason’s company also offers regular placements for Brookes students. The last two students, Harry Vigar and Sufian Rahman also attended the networking dinner.

The two week placement organised by OBRMES gave me a really good opportunity to meet people within the industry representing companies like JLL and BNP Paribas. Being able to network and get my name out there was really helpful and will help me in my future career.

The evening included an overview from Programme Lead Rebecca Gee about the new Real Estate apprenticeships that have just launched. This was followed by an in conversation between alumnus Charlie Green ‘92, Joint Founder and Co-CEO, The Office Group (TOG) and Ian Marcus, from Ian Marcus Consultants. We heard about TOG’s mission to design innovative spaces in urban buildings.

Fundraising activities on the night included an entertaining auction and heads or tails which raised almost £5,000 and will go towards Estate Management scholarships.
