Engaging programme for sixth form and college students

25 January 2018

Brookes Engage Event

Nine alumni returned on the 17th January to Brookes to participate in a careers’ event for Years 12 and 13 school and college students who are on the Brookes Engage programme. The alumni professions ranged from freelance writer and Film Director to Head of Volunteering at Oxfam and Senior Social Worker.

Brookes Engage is a long-term engagement programme that has been developed for students who come from backgrounds which are under-represented in higher education. It is designed to support pupils to make a successful transition into university or from further education. Brookes Engage aims to provide participants with experiences that will develop skills and attributes that will be beneficial both in the world of study and employment.

I had a wonderful evening talking to students on the Brookes Engage programme about my career and experience. I was fascinated hearing from them about their University choices, their career aspirations and their determination to do well. The student’s positive outlook was infectious and I came away feeling great. A brilliant programme by Oxford Brookes.

Daniel o'Driscoll - Head of Volunteering & Engagement at Oxfam

I thought the evening was very useful in helping us to get an insight into the wide variety of careers available to us after university especially when networking is key in deciding whether we are successful in the future. I also enjoyed the mentorship we received from the professionals. The evening was definitely one of the most useful and practical sessions we've had so far since it offered us direct insight into our possible future careers. Thank you to the Alumni team for making these opportunities available to us.

Jessica Masih - Cohort 3 Brookes Engage student

I thought the session was really informative and interesting, I learnt lots about the industry which I am aiming to work for in the future and learnt lots about other occupations. Thank you for setting it up, myself and magda loved it.

Katelyn Munro - Cohort 3 Brookes Engage student

During the evening the students moved from table to table enabling them to talk to all alumni in a ‘speed networking’ style. The students were able to ask all their burning questions in small groups anything from training, the format of their work day and even salary brackets!

It was a buzzy evening with the students asking lots of interesting questions.

One of the students since the careers event has actually secured work experience at Sophos organised by alumna Laura Paine '11, which is fantastic news.
