Brookes Connections

Brookes Alumni E-mentoring for Students

Brookes Connections enables you to mentor students in a structured but flexible way through an easy to use online portal. You will help students who are pro-actively seeking one-to-one careers advice, support and insight into your profession.

It is open to all alumni of Oxford Brookes, Oxford Polytechnic and other predecessor institutions.

What is in it for you

  • an opportunity to reflect your own practice
  • enhanced job satisfaction
  • the satisfaction of giving a motivated student increased knowledge, skills and experience in attaining their career goals
  • a reinforcement of your own study skills and knowledge of your subjects
  • professional relationships
  • enhanced peer recognition recognition for your skills and experience
  • personal satisfaction through supporting the development of others.

You will be helping students who have specifically asked for your support - based on your professional skills and experience, and the subject you studied.

How Brookes Connections works

It all takes place online, on our easy to navigate portal site where you can enter your professional and educational details - or simply import details from your LinkedIn profile. You will be able to sign-up to the programme in early October.

For now you can register your interest, and we will contact you once the portal is available for you to sign-in.

Ten-week e-mentoring scheme

Brookes Connections gives students the opportunity to partner with you for a ten week period. You will help them with topics such as setting career goals, job applications and networking.

Typically contact with each student will be on a weekly basis and you can choose how many students you wish to mentor. In Semester 1 the ten-week scheme starts in mid-November. In Semester 2, it will begin in late January.

This scheme is likely to be very rewarding for both mentor and student - however there is a time commitment involved and you do not have to offer this support if you are concerned about that commitment.

‘Ask a question’

As well - or instead of - the mentoring scheme, you can offer to answer one-off career-related questions from any students. They will decide whether to ask you based on the relevance of your professional and educational background to their questions.
